Leeds nightclub Wire is closing down.
One of the city's longest-running clubs, the 300-capacity basement venue broke the news via social media earlier today, April 19th. The statement cited wider difficulties in the nightlife industry post-pandemic as reason for the closure.
"Since reopening after the pandemic the UK nightlife industry had been under immense pressure which we have not been immune to," the statement said. "The cost-of-living crisis and changing lifestyle choices coinciding with other looming commercial challenges unique to the venue has gradually led to the unavoidable outcome that the club can no longer operate as a viable business."
The Call Lane venue, which opened in July 2005, replaced former club Think Tank with a stripped-back interior and varied dance music-focused programme. Over the years, the club has hosted the likes of Helena Hauff, Theo Parrish, Tama Sumo, Craig Richards, DJ Stingray 313, Jayda G, SHERELLE, Andrew Weatherall and Coki.
Wire also incubated a number of collectives, including renowned dubstep party Ruffage, Pearson Sound's vinyl-only series Acetate and Butter Side Up.
The club will feature Hamish & Toby, Vlada, O'Flynn, Vladimir Ivkovic and Soul Mass Transit System, among others, before closing in June. Details of the venue's final party are TBA.
